Pest prevention: stop infestations before they begin

It’s one of the last things homeowners want to discover in their homes: a pest infestation. Have you noticed strange noises coming from the attic at night? Can you hear scratching behind your walls?

Your home’s not haunted, it’s infested. Rodents, insects, and other pests enter your home to search for water, food, and shelter. If your home can provide any of these three necessities to them, then they’ll want to set up camp behind your walls, in your attic, in the basement, under the refrigerator, and anywhere else they can hide!

Pest prevention is the best way to stop pests in their tracks before they’re ever able to enter your home and begin infesting. What’s the best way to prevent pests? Below you’ll find several preventative pest control methods to try.

Here’s what you need to know!

Remove What They Want

When pests enter your home, they’re most likely looking for a few things. They need water, food, and shelter. If your home provides all three of these necessities, then it’ll quickly become a luxury resort in the minds of rodents and insects.

When you remove these necessities, you help prevent an infestation. For starters, remove any standing water in your home. This includes pet water bowls.

Any spills that happen should be cleaned up quickly (food or water). Never leave food crumbs lying around. Always wipe down the countertops and dining table when done using them.

Some pests will find shelter in certain areas of your home. How can you remove access to this shelter? Once you do all three, you make your home less attractive to all kinds of pests.

Update Your Food Storage

Take a look at the food you have in your pantry and cabinets. How do you currently store your food? Can pests access it if desired?

Although keeping food in plastic bags or keeping it closed with clips will help keep some pests out, others are smart enough to still get into it. For this reason, the best action to take is to place all food items in hard plastic food storage containers with an airtight lid. This will prevent pests from smelling the food and getting into it.

Do this with any food items that aren’t in cans or other plastic containers.

Fix Leaks in the Home

Leaks in your home will attract pests. Pests can smell the water and will be on the hunt for it. If there’s even the slightest leak in your home, then you can guarantee pests are on their way.

Conduct a full inspection of your home both of the interior and the exterior. Check for signs of any possible leaks. Any leaks should be repaired immediately.

Clean the Clutter

Pests love to reside in homes with lots of clutter. If your home is full of clutter, then different pests will see this as the perfect shelter or hiding place. When you rid your home of lots of clutter, you can prevent a pest infestation.

Try to clean your home regularly and then deep clean it once a month. Remove any items that you don’t need or use. You should especially remove cardboard boxes and plastic bags if not using them.

Seal All Entryways

How are the pests entering your home? Unfortunately, pests will find their way into your home through even the smallest cracks or openings. This is true for both insects and rodents!

Do a walkthrough of your entire home. Pay close attention to any signs of cracks or holes in the walls, near the baseboards, or around windows and exterior doors. These are all possible access points.

When you find any cracks or holes in your home, you should seal them right away. You can also seal around plumbing and fix window screens with tears in them. Check the outside of your home as well.

Do you notice any possible entryways? Make sure to seal them properly to prevent pests from entering.

Check Packaging Before Bringing Home

One way pests enter your home is through outside objects. When you bring certain items into your home, you could be bringing along an uninvited guest as well. Always make sure to check the packaging before bringing it inside.

This goes for boxes of any sort and even grocery bags.

Dispose of Garbage With a Tight Lid

Your kitchen garbage should have a lid on the top of it that seals tightly. Keep this lid closed when not using your trashcan. Then, make sure to dispose of your garbage on a regular basis.

Do your best not to let it sit in the trash full to the top for several days. Different pests will smell the trash and begin making their way towards it. When disposing of it outside, you should also remember to toss it in a hard plastic container that also has an airtight lid.

If you allow it to sit outside in only a trash bag, then lots of critters and pests will come to feast.
