What Is a Pantry Moth?
It’s a small food moth common to the US and Europe. They’re called pantry moths because that’s where you’ll find them, in your pantry feasting on all the goodies
What Do They Look Like?
They’re not very big, at around 3/8 inches long with a wingspan of 5/8 inches. Their color varies but is mostly grey, with some brown or bronze markings on their wings.

How do they get into the pantry?
They enter your home through windows, doors, and any gaps they find around things like air vents. Once they’re in, their sense of smell guides them to the culinary delights.
Which foods attract them?
They’re attracted to dried foods and anything strong-smelling or badly packaged as they eat their way in through the corners or edges.
How long do they live?
Their complete life cycle is around four months. These little devils are prolific and can lay hundreds of eggs at a time. If you have an infestation, you will often see eggs in the food.
The larvae hatch within days of being laid, and that’s when the mischief begins. At this stage, they eat continuously and leave silky threads in the food, which creates a webbing. Next comes the pupal stage, when they make cocoons around their bodies. The pupae can usually be found in any cracks or crevices near the food store.
After two to three weeks, they reach adulthood, and the fully-grown moths emerge from the cocoons. Then the cycle begins all over again!
Are they harmful?
They don’t bite or sting people or animals, but the damage they do is substantial. They infest and contaminate dried foods, which encourages mold growth, and you may find they have deposited webbing and feces.
